African American Match Holder
This stunning piece is hand-carved entirely out of walnut, with a barrel (for holding matches) on top of a slave in a recumbent position. The barrel is attached to the back of the slave with an off-set screw. There are three small holes in the base which suggest that this piece was once attached to a larger base or stand. Early to mid 19th C. Measuring 4 1/4" tall by 6" in length by 2 5/8" wide at the base. A terrific piece of African American folk art!
